Historical Leyland I
The History of Leyland must begin with the Parish Church
In this picture three ages of the history of Leyland are demonstrated in one.

Can you spot them from the archetecture?

The Chancel
The foremost part of the structure is the chancel. This is the oldest part of the building. It can be seen by the shape of the roof that it once stood alone as a much smaller building. I have been unable to determine the age of this part of the building. There has however been a church on this site from at least 1100
  Nave and Tower

The Nave is the widest part of the building and this one was rebuit in 1817. it is the most recent addition to the structure.
The tower being four square and therefore much stronger has a longer history. This one was built around 1500.

The Old Grammar School
The Parish Church and Grammar School are built on a raised area that overlooks the surrounding village. The school is one of the most remarkable buildings in the area. it was for two hndred years the only school in Leyland. It is the fourth oldest grammar school in Lancashire. It was originally established in the church building in 1524 until the school building was erected around 1600. The exterior is of seventeenth century hand made brick but the interior is much older and may be the remains of a timber-framed building. It was almost demolished in the 1970s to make way for a car park but thanks to the protests of the local community it was given a reprieve. Following restoration work and re-roofing it was re-opened in 1977 as the South Ribble Museum and Exhibition Centre

St Andrews Graveyard
This is the graveyard at St Andrew's. The oldest grave with date intact is from 1588. Some graves are even older than this but without visible inscription. Behind is the old Grammar School.

South Ribble Museum
This is the front entrance to the South Ribble Museum and Exhibition Centre. This is the ideal place for information regarding the development of the town. however the museum is manned by volunteers so opening times are limited. Behind can be seen the nave abd Tower ofSt Andrews Parish Church
