Marsden Theatre Entrance
These are the outbuildings that belonged to the old Worden Hall before it was destroyed by fire. They house the cafe, restaurant and bar as well as the Marsden Theatre. The Marsden is a small intimate setting that is home to the C'est Tous Theatre Group.
Entrance to Maze?
This appears to be the entrance to the maze but in reality it is a false entrance. The maze was designed by who also designed Kew Gardens. This demonstrates the influence and wealth of the Farington Family.
Centre of Maze
If you manage to eventually find your way to centre of the maze you are left with the equally onerous task of finding your way back out again. Alex gas climbed to an elevated to try to gain an advantage before he sets off.
Gardener's Cottage and Walled Garden Entrance
This is where the gardeners were housed adjacent to the walled garden. One special feature about the garden was the fact that the walls had cavities. At about six places around the wall were hearths. These contained fires that were able to heat the whole of the wall enabling tropical fruit to be grown throughout the year.
Ice House and Ha Ha Wall
This picture displays two interesting features about the Park. Within these walls is a manhole. beneath which is a 20ft pit. The pit is about 8ft in Dia and is ovalular in shape. It is lined with red brick similar to the outbuildings and has a drain at the bottom. In the winter the ice was gathered from the various pondsand thrown down the pit. It was one of the men's jobs to smash the ice to pulp with a pick enabling the maximum amout to be stored. Being positioned on the Northern side of the wood it was protected from the heat of the sun at all times. In this condition the ice remained frozen all year round and was used in the kitchen to preserve the food in warm weather.
The other feature is the wall. This was designed to esperate the garden from the area in which the animals grazed without obstucting the view. It surrounded the whole house and although little remains, the old contour can still be seen from the air.
Worden Halt
This is a great favourite with the children and parents of Leyland. The trains are run by members of the Leyland and District Model Railway Society. Every Sunday and Tuesday throughout the summer months these enthusiasts offer rides to the children free of charge. The train at the bottom left is about to leave on a circuit around the track as the engineer stokes up the boiler. The train at the top runs visitors to and from the car park to the central attractions.
